Madd ‘Aarid Li-Sukoon

Madd ‘Aarid Li-Sukoon

Elongation because of a sukoon (Al-Madd Al-‘Aarid Lil Sukoon — الْمَدُّ الْعَارِضُ لِلسُّكُونِ) occurs only at the end of an ayah or when stopping on a word if a temporary sukoon (temporary because the reader has to stop on the word) appears on the letter that comes after one of the Madd letters, then this is known as Mad Al-Aarid. ‘Aarid means «temporary», so we can translate it as «temporary Madd».

This madd can be elongated for 2-4-6 counts.

Examples:

If there comes hamzah after one of the madd letters and a pause by sukoon is made on the hamzah, then it is not permissible to elongate only for 2 counts and it is read as the «connected madd». Since the two madds (madd al-’Aarid and madd al-Muttasil) meet in one word it is elongated for 4-5 counts as madd al-Muttasil is stronger.

السَّمَآءُ - الْمُسِيءُ

Note:

Madds are distinguished into the weak and strong ones. The strongest one is «Laazim» (اللَّازِمُ), then al-Muttasil (الْمُتَّصِّلُ), al-’Aarid, al-Munfasil (الْمُنْفَصِلُ) and al-Badal (الْبَدَلْ).

1. In the word *ءَآ*مِّينَ al-Badal and al-Laazim madds meet, but al-Laazim is the one that is read and the word is elongated for 4-5 counts as al-Laazim is stronger.

2. In the words وَجَآ*ءُوٓ أَ*بَاهُمۡ al-Badal and al-Munfasil madds meet, but al-Munfasil is the one that is read and the word is elongated for 4-5 counts as al-Munfasil is stronger.

Exercises:

1. Find the rule of madd al-’Aarid in surah al-Fatihah.

2. Read surah al-Adiyat and find the rules of madd in it.

Questions:

1. What is madd al-’Aarid?

2. Why is madd al-’Aarid called so?

3.For how many counts can we elongate this madd?
