Madd Badal

Madd Badal

This madd means «exchange lengthening» (madd al-badal — مَدُّ الْبَدَلِ) — is the substitution of the second hamzah with a sukoon to one of the madd letters corresponding to the haraka (vowel) of the previous letter.

The exchange madd takes place if the madd letters follow hamzah:

ا و ي

Examples:

Length: it should be stretched for 2 counts.

The basis *ءَا*مَنُ — *أَأْ*مَنُ the second hamzah with a sukoon is substituted to ا, as ا suits fathah.

The basis *أُو*تُوا — *أُؤْ*تُوا the second hamzah with a sukoon is substituted to و, as و suits dammah.

The basis *إِي*مَن — *إِإْ*مَان the second hamzah with a sukoon is substituted to ي , as ي suits kasrah.

Note:

If Wasl is followed by Hamzah in one word, then we omit that wasl and read the hamzah.

Example:

If this word is read separately, we remove the hamzah leaving و , then we place dammah where there was wasl and read:

If this word is read separately, we remove the hamzah leaving ي, then we place kasrah where there was wasl and read:
