The subordinate stretch (الْمَدُّ الْفَرْعِيُّ) is an extra stretch due to a hamzah (coming before or after) or sukoon following the letter of madd. Thus, the reasons for the subordinate stretch are:

1. Hamzah — before or after the madd letter.

2. Sukoon — can be located only after the madd letter.
