Madd Iwad

Madd Iwad

The compensated madd (madd al-iwad — مَدُّ الْعِوَضِ)— is an extension of ا which occurs at the end of an ayah which ends with tanween fathah. It can occur in the middle of an ayah as well when we stop at a word which ends with tanween fathah.

It is extended for two counts.

For example:

Because of this madd tanween is changed to alif when stopping at a word which ends with alif maqsurah ( short alif) ى.
