Madd Munfasil

Madd Munfasil

(madd al-munfasil— الْمَدُّ الْمُنْفَصِلُ) occurs when a word ends with a madd letter and is followed by a word that begins with hamzah (ء).

It is extended for 4-5 counts

This madd is called disconnected because the prolongation letter (one of the madd letters) and hamzah are in different words.

Examples:

Pay attention to these examples:

This collocation consists of two words: the first one is يَا and the second one is أَيُّهَا that is why the rule of «madd al-munfasil» is implemented. The madd letter at the end of the first word and hamzah at the beginning of the next one.
