Madd Silah

Madd Silah

The linking madd (madd-al-silah — مَدُّ الصِّلَةِ) — a possessive pronoun that represents a third party of male gender.

There are 3 regulations concerning it:

1. This is the lengthening of the possessive pronoun ـه with the condition that the letters preceding and following it are vocalized. This type of the madd is called «the lesser (sughra) linking prolongation» صِلَةُ صُغْرَى.

It must be extended for two counts.

For example:

إِنَّهُ كَانَ خَلَقَهُ مِنْ تُرَابٍ

2. However, if the pronoun ـه is followed by hamzah, then this madd is extended like the disconnected madd. This type of the madd is called «the longer (kubra) linking prolongation» صِلَةُ كُبْرَى

Silah kubra must be elongated for 4-5 counts.

For example:

مِّنۡ عِلۡمِهِۦٓ إِلَّا

3. But if there is a sukoon before the possessive pronoun or after it, then it is not elongated.

For example:

Exceptions:

فِيهِۦ مُهَانًا
Surah 25 al-Furqan, ayah 69

The 69 verse of the surah Al-Furqan: in this verse a madd letter is written before ـه but nevertheless the pronoun is extended.

وَإِن تَشۡكُرُواْ يَرۡضَهُ لَكُمۡ
Surah 39 az-Zumar, ayah 7

In this case the letters that are preceding and following the pronoun «???» are vocalized «???» but are not elongated.
