al-Waqf

A stop (الْوَقْفُ) — a brief pause at the end of a word, in order to catch your breath with the intention to resume reading.

If we make a pause at the end of an ayah and the word finishes with a letter vocalized by fathah, kasrah, dammah, tanween, sukoon or some other small letters, then these vocalizations are not read and are pronounced with a sukoon.

If a word finishes with tanween fathah with alif, then the last letter should be extended. This is the so-called compensated madd— مَدُّ الْعِوَضِ.

If a word ends with the letter و or ي with vowels, then these vowels are not read and the previous sound is prolonged.

If a word ends with ة (ta marbuta) with any vowel, it converts into ه (the letter ha) with a sukoon.
